Researching human effectiveness
How to know if you're effective or not — and what changes when state and result move in the same vector. A scientific-philosophical approach with metrics and practice.
An intro for those entering the research. One element of a larger study — focused on effectiveness.
Effective ≠ busy. Functional ≠ productive

What effectiveness is
Effectiveness is the ratio of achieved result to resources spent. Authoritative definitions agree: measure the shift, not the state.
Effectiveness is rising productivity without losing state, or with fast recovery of spent resources.
More result, but the body holds the line — sleep, focus, hormones in range.
Sprint or hyperfocus "super-productivity" — legal, but only with a fast return to base afterwards.
Why the formula is exactly this
Drop any factor and effectiveness collapses. Two failure modes science describes directly:
Hit the fact but burned the state: sleep, focus, hormones down. This is allostatic load (McEwen) — chronic load without compensation leads to depletion and burnout. Effect exists, but the cost eats the base.
Became calmer, "deeper" — but nothing appeared in the world. This is functional stagnation: per Self-Determination Theory (Ryan & Deci), growth comes through real achievement, not just self-feeling. Without a trace in the world, change is unprovable.
How the world measures it now
Tests
Psychometrics: Big Five, Grit, PsyCap, career anchors — stable traits.
Questionnaires / self-report
What a person notices themselves. Subjective, drifts with mood.
Tasks / behavior
What they actually did: speed, accuracy, adherence.
Between "want" and "do" — a gap

So a single data source is a trap. Each alone lies:

Effectiveness stops being a probability and becomes a trajectory: we see not "worked / didn't", but "index plateaued on day 9, held 3 weeks, didn't return after a pause".

HRV, sleep, cortisol, recovery — objective resource.

what is actually done: adherence, speed, accuracy, endurance.

Three independent channels → MNPI index
Mono-method
- one device = systematic error
- words alone drift with mood

MNPI
- Brain (EEG NEIRY): α↑, β↓, Relaxation Index 2–3×
- Body (HRV, Baevsky): peak-and-plateau, not peak-and-back
- Phenomenology (audio): tells "dissolved in void" from "contact with body"
The index does not average channels but requires their agreement within one time window. It is computed only on coincidence.
The effectiveness index formula
Effectiveness is computed from two independent axes — resource and result — and fused into one final index.

How much your physiological and neuro resource grew vs point A. Device only: HRV, sleep, EEG, amygdala.
How far you actually brought it to result: done tasks + what you call a goal + outside evaluation (master, contract, money).
Square root of R·G — so a collapse on one axis can't mask success on the other. Times C: did device and your words agree.

What we measure along four axes is not an invention. It is a legitimate scientific design. What fresh papers showed, directly echoing our approach:

Acute stress + simultaneous fMRI–EEG. Recovery is a separate, delayed phase. Resilience is not absence of reaction, but a protective and adaptive stress-management mechanism.

What they measured: people in a game of varying difficulty to evoke flow and anti-flow, while recording EEG, heart rate, SpO₂ and skin conductance at once.
What they saw: in flow, alpha- and theta-rhythms dominate (transient hypofrontality — "quieted prefrontal", less inner commentator), while HRV drops to a minimum → a U-shaped curve.
HRV = heart-rate variability, a marker of the parasympathetic (braking, recovery) system. In flow the brain is at max sympathetic activation ("engaged"), parasympathetic is suppressed — variability drops. When the game is too easy or too hard, HRV is higher (brain not "in the zone"). So the HRV dip down = a marker of flow specifically, not exhaustion-stress.

Mindfulness induces neuroplasticity: cortical thickening, reduced amygdala reactivity, improved connectivity. Meditation changes activity in the amygdala and hippocampus — zones of emotional regulation and memory.
What we call "Depth" is not a transient shift, but a trace of practice in brain structureNot "mood improved for a session" — the brain's baseline mode changes structurally. So we measure not the moment, but the trajectory of change.

Reaching intrinsic goals lifts well-being; extrinsic ones (money/fame) do not.

d is Cohen's d, an "effect-size" metric in statistics. It shows how far one outcome differs from another in units of standard deviation: ~0.2 small, ~0.5 medium, ~0.8 large. d=0.65 is above medium — a solid, practical effect.
Peter Gollwitzer (1999) meta-analyzed 94 independent tests: "if-then" plans (if X happens, I'll do Y) raise goal follow-through by on average d≈0.65 — meaning people finish about twice as often. We don't just "voice tasks" — we fix the intention and the action trigger, which doubles the odds of a result. That's why the first practice is to speak it out and record it.
