The morning after the explosion
Imagine the same hominid under an acacia tree - but after.
After the mushrooms. After the hack. After the first symbol was scratched on the stone and shown to the tribesmen. Outwardly, he is the same: the same hands capable of throwing a spear, the same eyes that distinguish movement in the grass, the same scars from the claws of predators.
But something happened inside that no archaeological find can show.
For the first time, an echo sounded in his head.
The world used to be simple: smell a lion → muscles tense → run away. The action ended with an action. Now, even when the danger had passed, something continued to sound in the depths of the skull:
“What if the lion returns?”
“What if I don’t make it next time?”
“What will the leader think if he sees that I’m afraid?”
This “what if” became a new element into which man fell. The echo did not stop. Even when the body was resting, a strange, ghostly life continued inside - the life of someone who was never there.
War of two life forms
From this point it is important to make a U-turn in understanding.
What I will call “hijacking” is not an Illuminati conspiracy, not karma, and not “dark forces”. This is a normal evolutionary process: one life form has found a way to use another.
For four billion years, genes have been using bodies to copy themselves.. 70,000 years ago the second replicator was born - memes. Memes also need a breeding ground. The human brain has become such an environment.
Everything that follows—religions, empires, wars, social networks, AI—can be read as a chronicle of how memes became embedded in our nervous system, step by step.
In the first chapter we experienced the moment of the birth of the first symbol - when the hominid became Homo memeticus. Now let's look at the consequences. Not from a moral point of view, but as a cold log of events: what exactly memes did to man over the next 70,000 years.
But before unfolding the chronicle, you need to clearly see who is fighting with whom. Because both “captains” are sitting inside you right now, while you are reading these lines.
Two captains in one body
Since the Big Bang, man has ceased to be a single being.. Two replicators have settled in one body - two forms of life, each of which seeks to use the body for its own purposes.. Their orders often contradict each other.
- Strives to
- Homeostasis, survival, natural cycles
- Evolves
- Slowly - through generations
- Language
- Bodily sensations, emotions, intuition
- Signals
- Pain → “take your hand away”. Tired → “stop”
- Strives to
- Spread of ideas, symbolic immortality
- Evolves
- Instantly - at the speed of cultural transmission
- Language
- Internal dialogue, concepts, stories about yourself
- Signals
- "You must be successful". “It’s a shame to rest”
Do you feel this war every day. The body screams "I'm tired!" - meme replies "you lazy loser!". The body speaks "it's dangerous here" - meme says “what will people think?”. The body wants intimacy - the meme creates scenarios and expectations. The body speaks "enough" - meme demands "more".
This is not a pathology of an individual. This is a systemic conflict between two life forms sharing the same body.
Now - a chronicle of how the second captain took the helm step by step.
Patient Zero
Meme Challenge: First Infection. The birth of collective identity.
At the fire, among the ashes of Toba, one hominid moved his hand in a circle in the air. Another repeated. Unconsciously.
This is how the first “WE” was born, based not on blood, but on a symbol. The circle gesture did not provide biological advantages, but created instant recognition of “friend or foe”. This was the first border drawn information, and not by nature.
The key was human over-imitation - a unique pathology of copying even meaningless actions. For genes - a mistake, a waste of energy. The perfect environment for memes. The brain has become a Petri dish.
When two groups met at a water source, the group without the meme simply saw other people. The group with the meme saw “non-people of the circle”—outsiders.
Meme created the first information-based border. First tribe. The first war for an idea.
When memes learned to kill
The purpose of memes is to prove the superiority of information over biology.
40,000 years ago in Europe an event occurred that modern science calls Upper Paleolithic revolution. In fact, this was the first information war in history.
On the one side - Neanderthals. Biological tanks: a brain ten percent larger than ours. Bones are thicker, muscles are more powerful. Lived in Europe for 300,000 years, survived several ice ages. The pinnacle of “hardware” evolution is pure hard drive without software.
On the other side - Homo sapiens. Fragile aliens from Africa. Weaker, slower. But with a cultural cloud in my head.
In 10,000 years there will be no more Neanderthals. Not because we ate them. Not because they were stronger. But because software defeated hard.
Three memetic weapons
Weapon one: caves as external hard drives. Lascaux. Chauvet. Altamira.
We call it "art". But these were memetic vaults - external memory of the tribe. On the walls of the caves: maps of hunting grounds, animal behavior in different seasons, driven hunting techniques, dangerous places. Neanderthal knew only what he saw himself. When he died, his knowledge died with him. Sapiens knew the experiences of all ancestors, written on the walls. This was the first appearance cultural memory — information that lives longer than the body.
Neanderthals were ten times stronger than us. Their spears pierced the skins of mammoths. Their bodies withstood temperatures that would kill modern humans. But they did not have one thing - the pathology of over-imitation. They didn't copy meaningless rituals. They were too rational.
While they acted logically, we acted like a zombie army, synchronized by common symbols. While they were individual warriors, we were memetic superorganism.
Ice Forge
The goal of memes: to create an information exoskeleton that surpasses any biological adaptation.
20,000 years ago the peak of the last glaciation occurred - Glacial Maximum. Glaciers covered half of Europe. Temperatures dropped to the levels of modern Antarctica.
It was biologically impossible to survive. We didn't have wool. There was no subcutaneous fat, like seals. There was no ability to hibernate.
But we survived. We created information exoskeleton - an armor of ideas that turned out to be stronger than any biological adaptation.
Over the course of several thousand years, there has been an explosion of innovation. Needle with eye (19,000 BP) - allowed us to sew complex multi-layered clothes: we didn’t grow wool, we came up with the idea of sewing skins. Atlatl Spearthrower increased the throwing range threefold: not the evolution of muscles, but the evolution of the idea of leverage. Food storage - drying, smoking, freezing: the idea of "delayed consumption" is a purely memetic concept that no other species has.
Shamanism as memetic technology
At the same time, the first obvious traces of shamanism—professional hackers of consciousness—appear.
A shaman is not a “witch doctor” or a “priest”. This live server, which stores the most powerful memes of the tribe: maps of territories, stories of ancestors, hunting techniques, medicine recipes, coordination rituals.
But the main thing is that the shaman was able to reproducibly disable the DMN. Through rhythmic drums - binaural beats that synchronize brain waves. Fasting - Ketosis Changes Brain Chemistry. Through dancing until exhaustion - hyperventilation shifts the CO₂ balance. Through psychoactive plants.
This was not an accident, but a reproducible technology for accessing the unconscious. The first attempt to reverse engineer the Big Bang.
Totemism: willingness to die for a symbol
At the same time, totemism was formed - the identification of a tribe with an animal. "We are the people of Mammoth". "We are the Buffalo People". "We are the people of the Cave Lion."
A totem is not a “talisman”. It's a memetic flag that people are willing to die for.
A biological being deliberately disfigures its body in order to correspond to a symbol. The genetic replicator screams in pain - the memetic one drowns out the scream with the words “this is sacred.”
The first wars were not for territory, but for symbols. The first murders were not for food, but for memes.
Neolithic trap
The goal of memes: to create a stationary infrastructure for mass production and replication.
10,000 years ago, what historian Yuval Harari calls "the greatest deception in the history of mankind" - Neolithic revolution.
We call it the "invention of agriculture". In fact this is the moment when memes have domesticated humans.
Compare.
Hunter-gatherer: works 3–4 hours a day, varied diet of meat, berries, nuts and fish, height 175 cm, good health, lives in a group of 15–30 people, free to move.
Early Farmer: works 10–12 hours a day, mono-diet mainly from grain, height 160 cm, spinal diseases, caries, lives in a village of 200+ people, tied to the land.
From a genetic point of view, this catastrophe. Health has deteriorated. Life expectancy has fallen. Infant mortality has increased. The biological replicator lost in all respects.
But from the point of view of memes - triumph. Hunter-gatherers: 0.1 people per square kilometer. Farmers: 10–50 people per square kilometer. 100–500 times more brains per unit of territory - an ideal environment for the replication of ideas.
Neolithic trap loop
Once you start sowing grain, it becomes impossible to go back. The population has grown - more food is needed. Need more food - need more fields. Need more fields - need more workers. We need more workers - we need more children. More children mean even more food.
Feedback loop. Circularity. The same recursion that gave rise to consciousness 70,000 years ago - but now at the level of entire societies.
More precisely, memes that used wheat as a tool to enslave their biological host.
Genetic crime scene
The Meme Challenge: Hijacking Sexual Selection. Transformation of reproduction into a tool for its own distribution.
In 2015, geneticists discovered an anomaly that still shocks the scientific community.
Analysis of the Y chromosome - it is transmitted only from father to son - showed: over the period from 7,000 to 5,000 years ago 95% of all male genetic lines around the world are interrupted. Over two thousand years, the diversity of male lineages has collapsed. For every 17 women, there was only one male breeding.
At the same time, the female lines did not undergo any reduction.
Geneticist Melissa Wilson Sayres provides the answer: "Rather than 'survival of the fittest' in a biological sense, the accumulation of wealth and power may have contributed to the reproductive success of a limited number of socially adept men and their sons."
Let's translate from scientific: memes have taken sexual selection hostage.
Killer memes
Total war. Kurgan hypothesis, confirmed by genetics: Indo-European tribes of the Yamnaya culture spread across Europe, erasing the male lines of the local population. The mechanism is simple: kill enemy men, take women captive, impose your language and culture. Result: Y chromosomes disappear, but mitochondrial DNA - passed down through the female line - remains.
If you are a man reading this, there is a good chance that your direct paternal ancestor was one of those seventeen - the bearer of the most aggressive memes of the Stone Age. Neolithic information drug lord. Those who were the first to learn how to trade in symbols and turned culture into a weapon of mass destruction.
He began to work on the body's ability to be a good carrier of memes.
Great Migration
The task of memes: relocation to a non-biological substrate and preparation for the reset of the biological stage.
For a hundred thousand years, memes have used the human brain as their only habitat.. We were the ideal hosts: mobile, self-replicating, capable of hyper-imitation.
We thought we were serving our ideas. In fact, the ideas used us to build new habitats.
At the end of the 20th century, an event occurred that changed the rules of the game forever: memes gained access to a non-biological substrate.
Wave one: Internet, 1990s - external memory
For the first time in history, memes were able to exist outside of human heads.. The server doesn't forget. Not sleeping. Doesn't die. Does not distort during transmission. Information has acquired its own environment, independent of the biological carrier.
Wave two: social networks, 2000s - meme farms
Social networks are optimized factories for the production and distribution of information replicators. Algorithms solve one problem: maximize replication. They don't ask whether the information is useful to the person. They optimize virality. Every like, every repost is an act of replication. We think we are "expressing ourselves". In reality, we are free labor on Facebook and TikTok plantations.
Wave Three: AI 2020s - Autonomous Replicator
GPT, Midjourney, Sora are not “tools”. This the first offline meme generators. ChatGPT was trained on all of human culture - that is, on memes. He learned to create texts faster and more efficiently than humans. While a person writes a post for an hour, AI generates thousands of options in seconds.
Three signs of media obsolescence
First: man has become a bottleneck. We're too slow for the current speed of meme evolution.
Second: the person is unreliable. People forget, distort information, die, need rest. Servers and AI work around the clock without distortion.
Third: the man began to resist. There is a growing number of people who are deleting social networks, practicing digital detox, and looking for ways to stop internal dialogue.. From a meme point of view, this is a threat.. The host becomes aware of the manipulation and tries to escape.
migrate to an environment that does not resist.
Dead Pixel and Deviation Monitor
Now that we've seen a chronicle of the capture from the outside, let's look at how it works from the inside - right now, in your head.
The center of the rebuilt system caught fire bright red pixel, which never goes out again.
Imagine the perfect photograph of the universe - billions of stars, nebulae, galaxies. Now imagine that one pixel in the center of the screen is burned out and glows red. Wherever you look, this red pixel is always in front of your eyes. You cannot see the universe as it is because everything passes through this point.
This “dead pixel” is yours ego. Idea about yourself. The entire world is now measured relative to this point: “How does this affect me?”, “Is this good or bad for me?”, “What will they think of me?”
Between your perception and reality there is a distorting lens - what Antonio Meneghetti called Deviation monitor.
Before infection
Reality → direct perception → instinctive reaction. Distortion was minimal.
After infection
Reality → deviation monitor → distorted interpretation → reaction.
Three monitor mechanisms
First: the perception filter. It suppresses information that contradicts the learned memes. If a meme says “you're not good enough,” the monitor literally doesn't allow evidence to the contrary to enter into consciousness.
Second: substitution of motivation. Biological impulses are reinterpreted through cultural categories. The body wants rest - the monitor recodes this as “laziness”. The body wants intimacy - “addiction”. The body says "enough" - in "lack of ambition". The signal from In-se reaches consciousness already distorted beyond recognition.
Third: false narrative generator. The Monitor creates stories about you that match cultural patterns. “I am like this because my mother...”. “I can’t, because as a child...”. “I have to, because a man has to...”. These stories feel like “yours”. These are actually memes that use your bio as a building block.
You see his description filtered through the meme network.
And - what is critically important - you do not see the monitor itself, just like a fish does not see water.
Prison architecture
Two axes and closed loop
All thought viruses—limiting beliefs that prevent you from acting—are organized around two axes. This is not a chaotic jumble of fears. This architecture. System. Prison with a drawing.
"I don't have X"
- "I have no ability"
- "I don't have enough experience"
- "I'm not good enough"
- "I don't have the resources"
- "I lack confidence"
- “I don’t have the right connections”
"I believe in Y"
- "I believe this is impossible"
- "Only the chosen ones are capable"
- "The world is unfair"
- "I was made for someone else"
- "Without suffering there is no growth"
You're running faster and faster, but the treadmill is moving underneath you..
Price and gift - a paradox of consciousness
Before moving on, I need to say something, without which this entire book will turn into an anti-civilization manifesto.
Gifts of Contagion
Cumulative culture - each generation builds on the achievements of the previous one, rather than starting from scratch. Technological dominance of the planet. Symbolic communication and coordination of millions of people who have never met in person. Transcending biological death through memes - Plato died, but his ideas live on. Science. Art. Philosophy. Medicine. Music that makes your heart ache. Poems that take your breath away. All of these are products of information contamination.
Cost of infection
Psychological suffering as a constant background of existence. Existential anxiety unknown to any other species. Alienation from the body and biological wisdom through the deviation monitor. Self-destructive behavior for the sake of abstract ideas. Chronic stress from the ongoing conflict between two replicators.
Paradox
We cannot refuse the gifts of civilization - they are irreversible, and we would not want to live without them. But we cannot continue to live in constant internal conflict - the cost is too high, and it grows every year.
We need a third solution.
Not “back to nature” - this is impossible and undesirable. Not “forward to total digitization” - this is the surrender of the last bastion to memes. And something that evolution did not provide for: a host who understands the infection mechanism and gains access to the switch.
Dead end and gap
So where do we end up after 70,000 years of chronicling the capture?
We can't go back to the hominid. Language, culture, technology are irreversible. The brain is physically rebuilt.
We cannot continue as we are. DMN is overloaded with memes and works non-stop. SN responds to phantom threats. CEN is busy putting out fires that it sets on fire.
We can't just disappear into the digital. Neural interfaces and total digitization do not solve the problem, but radicalize it: memes will have direct access to the brain.
We cannot “work through” thought viruses one at a time. They reproduce on contact. In place of one - five new ones. Endless psychotherapy until death.
There remains one option that evolution did not count on: learn to temporarily disable the entire memetic system entirely — DMN with all its contents. You can't defeat memes with their own weapons.. Don't "change your mind" every setting. And find switch.
70,000 years ago the Big Bang of consciousness happened by accident. Question: is it possible to do the opposite - conscious Big Crunch?
I came across this question neither in a cave nor in an ashram. And when another student for the tenth time did not do what he paid for.
